How It Works

Modern IP phones are network devices. They connect to your phone system over your internet connection, regardless of where that internet connection is. This means you can unplug your desk phone from the office network, take it home, plug it into your home router, and it will register back to your office phone system automatically.

Here is what happens behind the scenes:

  1. Your IP phone powers on and connects to your home internet
  2. It reaches out to your office phone system (or cloud PBX) over the internet
  3. The phone system recognises the handset and registers it as your extension
  4. You now have your full office phone experience at home — same extension number, same speed dials, same features

The phone system does not care whether the handset is 5 metres away in the office or 50 kilometres away at your home. As long as there is an internet connection, it works.

For businesses with on-premise phone systems, your provider may need to open a port on the office firewall and configure NAT traversal. This is a one-time setup that takes about 15 minutes. Cloud phone systems typically work without any firewall changes at all, since the handsets already communicate over the internet.

What About Call Quality?

The most common concern we hear is about call quality. The good news is that a single VoIP call uses very little bandwidth — approximately 100 kbps in each direction. Even a basic NBN connection provides more than enough capacity.

That said, call quality depends more on connection stability than raw speed. If your home internet has high jitter or packet loss (common on older FTTN connections), you may experience choppy audio. We recommend testing the connection before taking the phone home — a simple VoIP quality test takes two minutes and tells us whether your home internet will deliver clear calls.

For staff on unreliable connections, a 4G backup dongle provides a failover path that keeps calls running even if the NBN drops out.
